Magic’s Dwight Howard to become a free agent

Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard told nba.com Monday that he would definitely become a free agent rather than sign an extension with Orlando.

Howard has expressed his desire to stay in Orlando, where he began his career, but he made it clear that he wasn’t happy with the current makeup of the Magic roster.

His priority is to win an NBA title, and he wants to see the Magic put together a championship-caliber team before he signs a long-term contract.

“I want to win a championship,” Howard said. “I think the owners have to really know that. That’s been my goal and my mission since I’ve been in the NBA — to win a championship.

“I don’t have side goals or agendas. My main goal is to win a championship. I want to have 14 other guys who feel the same way.”

Murray wins Queen’s Club title

Andy Murray won his first title of the season, beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4, at Queen’s Club in London in a final played a day late because of rain.

Murray also won this Wimbledon tuneup in 2009. He is the first Briton to win at Queen’s Club at least twice since Francis Gordon Lowe in 1913, 1914 and 1925.

Sabine Lisicki, who slipped outside the world’s top 200 last year after seven weeks on crutches, beat fourth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, 6-3, 6-2, to win the Aegon Classic at Birmingham, England.

The 21-year-old German won after the final had been postponed from Sunday because of rain.

Top-seeded Kim Clijsters beat Monica Niculescu, 7-5, 7-5, in the first round of the Unicef Open, a grass-court warmup for Wimbledon at Den Bosch, Netherlands.

In the men’s tournament, top-seeded Nicolas Almagro lost to Michael Berrer of Germany, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Kyle Busch was docked six points and his crew chief fined $25,000 because his car failed post-race inspection at Pocono Raceway.

The No. 18 Toyota was found to be too low during NASCAR’s inspection Sunday.

NASCAR responded Monday by docking Busch six driver points and car owner Joe Gibbs six owner points.

Crew chief Dave Rogers received the fine.

Former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor has hired Drew Rosenhaus as his agent and has taken steps toward making himself available for an NFL supplemental draft.

Oregon cornerback Cliff Harris has been cited for driving 118 mph on a suspended license.

Oregon State police say Harris, 20, was pulled over after an off-duty trooper spotted him about 4:35 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 5 south of Albany, Ore. An on-duty officer clocked Harris and pulled him over.

Harris was cited for driving with a suspended license and exceeding the speed limit in excess of 100 mph. Police say he was driving a rental car.

Two people familiar with the decision told the Associated Press that Detroit Red Wings assistant Paul MacLean has been hired as the coach of the Ottawa Senators.
