Norway: An extreme Arctic adventure

Norway: An extreme Arctic adventure

Ever think of snowmobiling on glaciers past frozen fjords, dog-sledding to an ice cave and spending the night in an old Dutch schooner that's stuck in the ice? A travel company called Red Savannah offers a tailor-made trip to Norway's northernmost Arctic area that takes things to extremes -- in a good way. The itinerary for the trip to the Svalbard Archipelago can be as remote as you'd like. The idea is to see walrus and reindeer, fjords and mountains, and explore a pristine part of Norway about 600 miles from the North Pole. The company's sample itinerary includes arriving in Oslo, flying to Lonyearbyen and then snowmobiling (you'll be trained and outfitted with gear) to places like Barentsburg, an old Russian coal mining town now abandoned, and Isfjord. And you can opt to mush to an ice cave with a team...

An aerial view Tuesday of the flooding caused by the Danube River at Baja, Hungary, about 100 miles south of Budapest.

River cruises canceled, modified due to floods in Central Europe

River cruise companies have been canceling and modifying cruises as flooding continues over a large swath of Central Europe, including Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Poland.

Viking Cruises, Tauck and others have been reaching out to customers and travel agents by email to tell them of the changes, according to company websites.

The BBC reports at least 19 people have died as of Tuesday, including 10 from the Czech Republic and five from Austria, after rivers rose to dangerously high levels.

In response to the crisis, Viking Cruises' website says it has canceled four cruises that were slated to sail this week: two between Nuremberg, Germany, and Budapest, Hungary, that were to leave Wednesday (today) and two between Berlin and Prague, Czech Republic, that were supposed to sail Saturday.

Another cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam is scheduled to sail Wednesday (today) aboard the Viking Sky but it will begin with a tour of Budapest and then transfer passengers to Vienna by...

A hiker explores Delicate Arch in Arches National Park in Moab, Utah.

Utah: Red-rock arches and rafting by day, river camping by night

In Moab, Utah, it's all about the desert. The small town on the edge of Arches National Park is the stepping-off point for remote canyons, amazing red-rock formations and a desert vibe best summed up in Edward Abbey's "Desert Solitaire."

An outfit called the Moab Adventure Center that specializes in desert doings offers a four-day Southwest Sampler designed as an introduction to the area. Participants spend two nights at the Gonzo Inn and spend one day touring the town and another hiking in the park to see some of the more than 2,000 sandstone arches. At sunset, there's an off-road tour of the back country, too.

On the third day, it's off to the Colorado River for an overnight rafting trip with a barbecue dinner among  red-rock cliffs and camping on the banks of the river. Then it's back to Moab by 2 p.m. for departure home.

Dates: Customized dates are offered March 1 through Oct. 31.

Price: $615 for adults 16 and older, $515 for children 5 to 15, based on double occupancy. It includes...

Universal Studios Japan attraction targets 'Resident Evil' zombies

A real-world version of the "Resident Evil" video game coming to Universal Studios Japan this summer will arm theme park visitors with a gun and a limited amount of ammunition in a fierce battle against attacking zombie hordes.

Scheduled to debut in July, the new "Resident Evil: The Real" walk-through attraction at the Osaka movie theme park will let visitors step inside a lifelike re-creation of the survival horror video game series and film franchise, known as "Biohazard" in Japan. The summertime-only attraction is expected to close Sept. 8.

Located inside the park's Palace Theater, the 5- to 10-minute walk-through attraction will feature costumed actors portraying zombies and monsters along with lighting, sound and special effects.

Once inside the attraction, visitors will use realistic 25-ounce handguns similar to practice weapons employed in police and military training ranges to "shoot" zombies unleashed by the evil Umbrella Corporation.

Those brave enough to experience the...
