Mexico: Cirque du Soleil dinner theater to land at Riviera Maya
Want a nice dinner and Champagne at your next Cirque du Soleil experience? That’s not the norm in Las Vegas, but it will happen in Riviera Maya come November when a custom-made theater and year-round show debuts in Mexico’s eastern Yucatan.
Canada-based Cirque du Soleil announced the dinner-and-show venue on Wednesday. The resident show joins others in Las Vegas and Orlando, Fla. Cirque says the venue will be a place where “performance and culinary creativity” meet.
“The setting is the most intimate custom-built theater of all the Cirque du Soleil resident theaters in the world,” President and Chief Executive Daniel Lamarre said in a statement.
Renderings of the 600-seat theater, which will be named the Vidanta Theater, show a building with wings set over a giant cenote, or natural pool. The design and materials are meant to evoke the beauty of the Yucatan’s jungle habitat. Resort developer Grupo Vidanta, which is building the theater exclusively for Cirque, expects to complete the project in May.
The theater is between Cancun International Airport and Playa del Carmen in the heart of the coastal resort area.
No word yet on what the first show’s theme will be, how much tickets will cost (Cirque currently has 19 shows up at various venues around the world, its website says.) Fans can register their e-mail address with the theater’s website for updates.
