Bruce Ackerman, Valley civic leader, dies at 64

Bruce Ackerman, a business and civic leader in the San Fernando Valley, died Thursday. He was 64 and had cancer.
Ackerman spent 10 years as president and chief executive of the Valley Economic Alliance, which focused on businesses in the region.
He also served since 2005 on the Community Redevelopment Agency’s board of commissioners.
[Updated 5:20 p.m.: Ackerman was born in 1945 in Kearney, Neb., graduating from Kearney Catholic High School and the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Between 1970 and 2000, he ran a series of business organizations, including the San Fernando Chamber of Commerce, the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce and Civic Assn. and the San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership.
He is survived by his wife, Cathy Coleman-Ackerman; his mother, Jeanne Ackerman; four children and 11 grandchildren.]
