It may not be the over-the-top bling that 50 Cent or Pharell fancy, but jewelry designer Joseph Brooks has a solid fan base of rock stars both legendary and just budding.

Brooks may dress the music stars of today, but in the ‘80s he discovered them. From 1980 to 1986, he owned music store Vinyl Fetish on Melrose Avenue where The Smiths, Duran Duran and Bauhaus made their first stops stateside. During those years, he also believed strongly in a then-unknown group called Guns and Roses, shopping its first demo and getting the band signed with Geffen.

With such strong roots in rock, it’s no wonder Brooks is keen to what musicians might like to wear. His jewelry is weighty, but still sophisticated and with traditionally punk rock elements like skulls and a naturally moody color palette from the use of pyrite and onyx.

Fans include Madonna, Lenny Kravitz, Siouxsie Sioux and Justin Timberlake, who is a collector of the line. The Jonas Brothers have been wearing loads of it lately. It’s a perfect accessory to scruff up their fresh-faced image just a bit. As for those purity rings, I’m gonna guess those are not Brooks’ creations. But as
anyone with good style knows, you’ve got to mix it up.

Get your inner rock god on and meet the man himself at the Joseph Brooks trunk show, Saturday, Dec. 6, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., at A+R 1121 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice.

Brooks will be there as well as his entire collection, which is on sale for 10% to 20% off, Saturday only.
