L.A.-based designer Trina Turk’s spring presentation was a sunny piece of SoCal moved to New York. Turk brought all the trappings of home with her to breathe life into her collection, including ‘70s-era fiber art wall hangings, Herb Alpert LPs and funky print floor pillows tailor-made for a key party, creating vignettes for her models.

There was the pool party, the backgammon game and the lovers’ romp. Everyone played along, more or less. ‘It’s been hard to get them to stand up,’ Turk said of the models. ‘They just want to lounge.’

As usual, the clothes were all about the designer’s signature prints, many of which had a botanical theme (‘Laguna plaid,’ ‘tiger leaf’ and ‘cactus flowers’). There were maxi-dresses, breezy tops and dresses, perfect for a Palm Springs weekend.

But what really stood out were the tailored pieces, including a crisp, white sleeveless jumpsuit with cropped pants, and a pleated white skirt that hit below the knee. Perhaps it’s the minimalism we left off with at the fall collections in Paris in March that’s making simpler look better now.

Turk never strays much from her 1960s-70s feel-good SoCal theme, but why should she? It’s enchanting, as anyone who lives in L.A. knows.
