‘I’ve been a fan of hers for a long, long time,’ said Eva Aldana, a Glendale resident near the back of the long, snaking line to meet Cindy Crawford on Thursday night at the Sephora store inside JCPenney at the Glendale Galleria. ‘I just want her autograph.’
The supermodel was on the premises to meet and greet fans in promotion of her beauty line, Meaningful Beauty. Dressed in a gauzy purple top and dark jeans, Crawford signed autographs and chatted with fans about skincare.
‘I like connecting with fans or customers and hearing what they have to say,’ said Crawford, tucked away in a back room of the department store before facing the throng. ‘You usually get at least one ‘aha’ moment, where you say, ‘Oh, we need to do that.’ I like that part of it.’
Crawford, who created the anti-aging skincare line with her longtime Paris-based dermatologist, Jean-Louis Sebagh, said the products ‘started out kind of selfishly.’
She explained, ‘As a model, my job was to show up with a clean slate.... I wasn’t a party girl, I didn’t smoke, and I ended up taking care of my skin.... Dr. Sebaugh and I had become friends. It wasn’t that hard for me to get to Paris twice a year since I was traveling so much. But then I got married and had kids and didn’t travel so much, and I kept joking, ‘Can’t we bottle this stuff?’ When I decided not to renew my Revlon contract, it was our opportunity to do something. I feel like I have incredible access that I can share with people.’
But of course Crawford’s status as a beauty icon had more to do with the assembled fans on JCPenney’s first floor than the supermodel’s products.
‘I think she’s beautiful,’ said Luisa Gonzales, a Hollywood resident who was walking through the store and decided to join the crowd. ‘I was just shopping and heard, ‘Wow, Cindy Crawford!’’
