Heather Hitchens has been appointed the new executive director of the American Theatre Wing, which administers the Tony Awards with the Broadway League. Hitchens has more than 20 years of experience in the administration and development of the performing arts, most recently serving as executive director of the New York State Council on the Arts for four years.

Hitchens is scheduled to begin her new job on July 5, succeeding Howard Sherman, who has served as executive director for the last eight years. Hitchens is the second woman to be named chief of a major showbiz-award organization after the recent appointment of Dawn Hudson as chief executive of the Oscar’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
