EGYPT: Youth group calls for ‘total boycott’ of election to strip it of legitimacy

Throughout much of the world, engaged young people encourage their peers to get involved in politics, campaign for trusted politicians and vote come election day.

Not so in Egypt, where a political system many see as deeply corrupt has inspired some young people to call for a boycott of the Nov. 28 parliamentary elections.

Ahmed Maher is co-founder of the April 6 Youth Movement, a political organization in Egypt. In the video below, presented by the Carnegie Middle East Center as part of a series, he discusses his movement’s role in Egyptian politics, the upcoming parliamentary elections and his call for a ‘total boycott’ of the vote to highlight what he calls its lack of legitimacy.
