About 10:15 a.m., 1,049 prisoners at the James A. Musick jail in Irvine were packed into buses and taken to the eastern part of the jail property for their safety, said Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. The jail, also known as “the farm,” is a low-security facility that houses primarily drug offenders, domestic violence offenders and petty thieves, Amormino said. The jail was evacuated because it was in the path of the Santiago Canyon fire, Amormino said. “The smoke has gotten thicker and the flames are now in sight,” he said. “The flames are about 1,000 yards from the prison.”
