Lou Dobbs departure from CNN was not a surprise. He had been clashing with the network’s brass, particularly CNN U.S. President Jon Klein, for some time as he morphed from business reporter to populist.

The question is where will Dobbs go next. He said he was considering a number of options and judging from this excerpt, perhaps he is thinking of running for office as opposed to finding another microphone.

‘I truly believe that the major issues of our time include the growth of our middle class, the creation of more jobs, health care, immigration policy, the environment, climate change, and our military involvement, of course, in Afghanistan and Iraq...Unfortunately, these issues are now defined in the public arena by partisanship and ideology rather than by rigorous empirical thought and forthright analysis and discussion. I will be working diligently to change that as best I can. And, as for the important work of restoring inspiration to our great free society and our market economy, I will strive as well to be a leader in that national conversation.

There has been speculation that Dobbs might end up at Fox News or Fox Business. In a statement issued after Dobbs did his on-camera goodbyes, the network said: ‘We have not had any discussions with Lou Dobbs for Fox News or Fox Business.’

Of course, that doesn’t mean the network won’t have discussions with Dobbs down the road.

Dobbs had more than a year left on his contract with CNN. Whether Dobbs had a non-compete clause in his contract that would prevent him from joining a competitor is not known. However, it is no secret that there was little love lost between Dobbs and the brass at CNN and its parent Turner Broadcasting. In other words, CNN and Turner might not have any problem with Dobbs going to a rival.
