And now to move on to next year. At least on paper.

Major League Baseball released its preliminary schedule for the 2012 season Wednesday and it has the Dodgers opening with a four-game set in San Diego April 5-8. Following an off-day, the Dodgers’ first home is against the Pirates April 10.

The Dodgers are calling April 10 the 50th anniversary of the Dodgers’ first game at Dodger Stadium, though that was played April 10, 1962. Which means this is actually the 50th season.

Next year’s interleague schedule will not take your breath away. The Dodgers mostly play teams from the American League West -– somehow minus the defending A.L. champion Texas Rangers.

The Dodgers have their usual home-and-away, six-game series with the Angels. The Angels will be at Dodger Stadium June 22-24. The Dodgers host the Chicago White Sox (again) June 15-17, and are at Seattle June 8-10.

In a curious bit of scheduling, the Dodgers are at Oakland June 19-21, at Anaheim June 22-24, then back north to San Francisco June 25-27.

The Dodgers end the season at home with three games against the Rockies Sept. 28-30 and the Giants Oct. 1-3. See, the Dodgers will see baseball next October.

There are some odd, one-city trips, but at least they’re to San Diego for just two games May 16-17, Arizona May 21-23 and Colorado Aug. 27-29. There is a geographically challenging three-city trip in June that starts in Colorado June 1-3, then goes to Philadelphia June 4-7 and then back West again to Seattle.

The Dodgers will once again be at home on Jackie Robinson Day, April 15, against the Padres.
