Hero Complex takes flight at Festival of Books

This weekend is one of the great free events in Southern California, the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, which brings readers and authors together for two days on the UCLA campus. It’s a wonderful way to spend the weekend. Some of the 450 authors this year are Ray Bradbury, Clive Barker, Joseph Wambaugh, Gore Vidal, David Baldacci, Arianna Huffington, T. Jefferson Parker, Eric Carle, Robert Crais, Steve Lopez and Michael J. Fox.

A cool part of the festival this year will be a dedicated area for graphic novels and comic books and their surging influence in pop culture. It’s called the Comix Strip and you can find out the details right here.

I’m going to be there too for three appearances and I would love to see you there if you can make it.

At 4 p.m. Saturday I will be moderating a panel on BOOM! Studios with Kim Krizan, Chip Mosher, Michael Alan Nelson, Gary Phillips and Mark Waid.

At 1:30 p.m. Sunday I will be chatting Kevin J. Anderson about ‘Enemies & Allies,’ his novel about a showdown between a certain caped crusader from Gotham City and the Man of Steel from Metropolis. Anderson is also co-author of ‘Sandworms of Dune’ and other volumes that tap into the legacy of Frank Herbert and his enduring masterwork, so we’ll certainly dig into those wormholes.

From 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday I will be at the Los Angeles Times Pavilion talking about Hero Complex as well as sharing war stories about covering rock heroes and movie stars during a decade of covering pop culture for The Times. (And there may be a special guest star with me....)
