COMIC-CON 2010: The Hero Complex podcast

Mild-mannered reporter by day, Geoff Boucher has swooped in to San Diego this week to cover the grand gala of all things pop culture -- Comic-Con International 2010.

For the rest of the week, hordes descend on the city to the south to consume, converse and kvetch about the latest and greatest in comics.

While Geoff takes us through what to expect in the podcast below, we also chatted with him a little bit about how he got hooked on comics and the superhero genre.

As the only kid for miles in his retirement community neighborhood in South Florida, he was left to entertain himself. He was ‘a tribe of one.’ He found sanctuary and adventure between the pages of comics, he said, all of which he still has today.

‘They became the way I learned about storytelling and ... going on adventures,’ he said.

And it’s probably no shock that journalism was in his future. As Geoff put it: ‘If you think about it, if you look through those comic books, Peter Parker worked for a

newspaper; Clark Kent worked for a newspaper; Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) sold newspapers or worked for a radio station. I figured, well, if it’s good enough for them ...’

Our super journalist and Hero Complex blogger said that if he had a super power, it would be mind reading. ‘It would sure make those interviews an awful lot easier.’
