David Carr is now a reporter for the New York Times, but he used to smoke cocaine (too much) and get arrested (too much of that, too). He also handed over his daughters to foster care and dealt drugs to support his habit. In his new book, ‘The Night of the Gun,’ he turned his reportorial skills on his own past, so his own history is as much reported story as it is memoir. ‘What I learned in two years of reporting, investigation and writing,’ he says in an introductory video on his website, ‘is that you can’t know the whole truth. But if there is one, it lies in the space between people.’

He videotaped all those interviews — hey, it’s more fun than a squat black tape recorder — and many of them are now on his website. Watching them begins to create a patchwork that shows those spaces between.
His book tour includes a brief stop in Los Angeles; he’ll be at Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena tonight. Although his tales of wild living might be better suited to West Hollywood. ...
