National Magazine Award finalists announced

The only problem with the American Society of Magazine Editors announcing the finalists for its print awards Tuesday is that now I have a really long reading list. Seriously, I could barely get to writing this post because I was dragged in by the stories that the awards link to (many are online, some are not).
However, tearing myself away, the National Magazine Award finalists news is that The New Yorker leads the pack with nine nominations, a hefty share of 54 total finalist nods. The small (and, this year, embattled) Virginia Quarterly Review tied the much bigger-staffed New York Magazine and the New York Times Magazine for second place; all three received six nominations each.
Other magazines that are finalists in multiple categories include GQ, Esquire, National Geographic, Martha Stewart Living, Time, Scientific American and Harpers. Los Angeles Magazine is a finalist in three categories.
All of those magazines have been recognized for their work before, yet this year six magazines received their first nominations: Cooking Light, House Beautiful, OnEarth, The Sun Women’s Health and (can I admit this is a favorite? I can, I think) Lapham’s Quarterly.
The awards are presented to written work and photography, and include individual pieces, columns, sections and the magazines overall. Earlier this year, the American Society of Magazine Editors presented a separate set of awards for digital content.
The National Magazine Award is a stabile by Alexander Calder called ‘The Elephant’ -- the prize version is affectionately called The Ellie. The awards will be presented at a ceremony May 9 in New York.
Which means there is plenty of time to read the articles. Why not start with our hometown heroes at Los Angeles Magazine? It’s a finalist for general interest, special interest magazine (and New York Magazine falls into news, sports and entertainment? Oh, you wacky New York judges). Los Angeles Magazine’s two other nominations are for ‘A Delicious Guide to Lunch in L.A.’ by Patrick Kuh and ‘The End’ by Ben Ehrenreich.
