Sure, they’re an instant lighting scheme for dorm rooms, but why not use them in your home office or guest bedroom? JC Penney’s Dorm Life desk and floor lamp sets ace two lessons in Decorating 101:

1. Keep it simple. These pared-down versions of swing-arm pharmacy lamps have a small, space-saving footprint and are available in industrial gray and basic black.

2. Create a focal point. Adding the ‘pop of color’ that decorators recommend for livening up a room is easy when the lamps also come in a vibrant chartreuse and fuchsia.
