That spaceship-looking structure in the picture above is officially known as the Moore House, and it was designed in 1958 by Frank Lloyd Wright’s son Lloyd Wright. Despite its pedigree, it has become a focus of contention in the affluent community of Palos Verdes Estates.

The current owner wants to raze the home and build an expansive Mediterranean-style house similar in style to other homes in the neighborhood, but preservationists say the current structure is an important piece of architectural history.

The issue is a source of consternation among city officials. As Corina Knoll reports: ‘They’ve found themselves in new territory, having never before dealt with protests over historic property, and need to tread carefully.’
