Wendy Greuel and Eric Garcetti remained locked in a tight fundraising battle, with the two frontrunners in Los Angeles’ mayoral contest each raising a little less than $500,000 in recent weeks, according to their campaigns. The candidates must file disclosure reports with the City Ethics Commission on Thursday.
City Controller Greuel, who raised $473,582 from Jan. 20 to Feb. 16, had a slight edge with nearly $1.7 million cash on hand. City Councilman Garcetti raised $452,819 and has $1.5 million cash on hand.

But Greuel has a steep advantage in outside efforts on her behalf. Of the $1.7 million spent by independent committees, more than $1.2 million has been spent to boost her bid, largely by labor.
Kevin James, the sole Republican in the race, has been the beneficiary of nearly $500,000 in outside spending. Updated fundraising figures for James, Councilwoman Jan Perry and fellow candidate Emanuel Pleitez were not available by late afternoon Thursday.
