Riverside police are searching for a suspect who stole a police car early Sunday and was believed to have been shot by an officer before he managed to get away on foot.

The incident began about 12:30 a.m. when an officer spotted a vehicle driving erratically on Pine Street and attempted to stop it, police said.

The officer followed the vehicle onto Houston Avenue, where it crashed into some bushes and the driver fled on foot, police said.

The officer gave chase and the suspect managed to make his way back to the scene, jump in the police vehicle and speed off, police said. The officer shot at the vehicle as the suspect drove away, they said.

The suspect apparently lost control of the vehicle near the intersection of Market Street and Auga Mansa Road and collided with various objects, police said. The suspect fled the scene and remains at large, they said.

The suspect is described as a male in his early 20s, 5-foot-8 to 6-feet-tall, with a medium build and short spiky black hair.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident is asked to contact police at 951-353-7103 or 951-353-7136.
