O.C. shooting: Phone records of gunman, one victim studied

Authorities are investigating a possible connection between the gunman in a shooting rampage in Orange County last week and one of the three people he killed.
Ali Syed, a 20-year-old college student, killed a woman in his parents’ Ladera Ranch home, fled and committed a series of violent carjackings in Tustin and Santa Ana that took two men’s lives before turning a gun on himself.
Among the three victims was a 26-year-old plumber named Jeremy Lewis.
A judge granted a search warrant for Lewis’ and Syed’s phone records over the weekend, said Tustin Police Lt. Paul Garaven.
“We’re just looking for any relationship between the two that might lead to a motive or any other clues,” Garaven said.
Authorities said Syed was an obsessive video gamer who spent long periods of time holed up in his bedroom.
Syed’s home and computer have also been searched for clues.
Police have not released information on why the first victim, Courtney Aoki, 20, was at Syed’s home in the early morning hours of Feb. 19.
Syed’s mother called 911 at 4:45 a.m. after hearing gunshots.
