The normally quiet Panteon Frances de la Piedad in central Mexico City was alive with activity Saturday as families arrived to pay their respects to the dead on the Dia de los Muertos.

Mexicans cleaned tombs and placed flowers at the graves of their loved ones. Candles were lighted and trails of orange flower petals were laid to lead the way for what Mexicans believe are the returning spirits of the dead. Favorite foods and drinks were left on the grave sites to be enjoyed by the spirits on their arrival.
