We told you recently about some of the dogs at the West L.A. shelter -- among them was Oliver (above), who’s still waiting for a home. His good friend, shelter volunteer Mirja Bishop, filled us in on this very appealing canine:

‘Oliver is a very special dog; I’ve discovered that it’s impossible to look at this boy and not fall in love with him instantly. He’s listed as a 3-year-old Shepherd mix, but he seems to be a mix of many breeds. He’s multicolored (primarily black and white) and his eyes are highlighted by dark fur, making them very expressive. His ears flop down like little wings. He’s cute, but it’s his personality that makes him so special. ‘ ‘He likes to run and play, but being locked up in a cage hasn’t dampened his spirit (at least not so far). He’s a gentle dog who’s waiting anxiously for his forever home. ‘Oliver is easy to love. During my volunteer time at the shelter I always make it a point to visit with him. As I approach his cage I find myself caught up in his enthusiasm -- when I greet him he leaps up and down and acts like I’m his long-lost friend. (It helps that I carry a treat with me, but Oliver has a way of making everyone feel very special. When he looks at you he smiles and it’s impossible not to smile back at him.) He’s an incredible dog who needs a very special person to love him, train him and be his friend.’

Oliver is already neutered, meaning he can go home with his new family right away. (We bet he’d appreciate this, since he’s been there since June.) Mirja suggests he would be happiest in a home with adults and older children.

He’s just one of the many pets waiting for a home at the West L.A. shelter, 11361 West Pico Blvd. (near the intersection of Pico and Sawtelle). You can get more information on Oliver by calling 888-4LAPET1 with his ID number, A0764380.

UPDATE: Oliver has been adopted -- we wish him luck in his new home!
