The recession is dealing a double-whammy to animal shelters: increasing need as people abandon their pets and decreasing funds as government is forced to cut costs.

The latest plea for help comes from the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility in southern San Diego County. The city has begun an Angels for Animals drive seeking donations.

Seventeen bins have been posted around the city for donations of pet beds, blankets, toys, etc. Follow this link for more information on the city’s website.

‘Pets are being abandoned at an alarming rate,’ said Deputy City Manager Leah Browder.

Last year the shelter took in more than 8,000 animals. This year, it will probably see a 20% increase even as budgets are cut.
