Bo Obama is met with open arms, and a parade, at Martha’s Vineyard

For most Americans, when the family takes a summer vacation, the pets pile into the family van -- even if it means the vacation is on 28 acres, and the van is Air Force One. And whereas most families are hustled off to go see Aunt Martha, the First Family is taking a load off at Martha’s Vineyard.

While some people are howling that the Obamas are staying on a portion of the island where properties like their 28-acre spread go for $50k a week, dog lovers on Martha’s Vineyard are so thrilled to have Bo sniffing around that they’ve created T-shirts (above) and organized the first-ever Martha’s Vineyard Dog Parade.

Here we have Bo, the Obama family dog, being walked to the grass by his handler before boarding the helicopters at Cape Cod Coast Guard Air Station in Massachusetts on Sunday.

And here Bo is waiting for a little privacy, perhaps?

According to the South Coast Today, about 200 people and their four-legged friends attended the doggy parade. Bo didn’t show up, which was a summer bummer for some. But since he didn’t RSVP, it didn’t upset too many people, although Ellen Jacobsen told the SC Today that her hound mix Bryce was looking forward to it. ‘We were hoping Bo would show up because Bryce really wanted to sniff his butt,’ she said.

Kate Feiffer read from her book ‘Which Puppy?,’ which is about the First family dog Bo.

Although residents say the Blue Heron Farm is so self-sufficient that there’s no reason for Bo or the rest of the Obamas to leave, many residents of Martha Vineyard hope that this isn’t the last that they see of the Portuguese Water dog.
