We’re always happy to hear about a happy ending for an animal in trouble. So it was with great interest that we read BoingBoing’s report about a cat with a bad case of wanderlust who mysteriously turned up on a commuter train in Dublin, Ireland.
A passenger on the train scooped the cat up and disembarked with her at the Pearse Street station in Dublin, leaving her with staffers with the Iarnróid Éireann transit company there.
Iarnróid Éireann employees examined surveillance video and discovered that the kitty had walked onto a train at the station in Malahide, a Dublin suburb. They sent out a message on Twitter with a picture of the tabby, which was widely retweeted.
Within hours of the initial tweet, owner Eric Bieci, who’d fruitlessly looked for his cat in Malahide, had been located and came to Dublin to collect her. In an interview with Irish news organization RTE, Bieci called the Iarnróid Éireann staff members who went out of their way to locate him ‘lovely people’ and thanked them for taking such good care of the cat, named Lilou.
Though Bieci must hope Lilou will never again take a trip on the DART, Iarnróid Éireann took the unusual step of issuing her her very own rail pass. According to Irish news organization RTE, Lilou is the first animal to ever be given such a pass by the company.
