Rise and rise again, but only if your doctors allow it -- so it goes for ‘Robin Hood’ direct Ridley Scott, who 24 Frames reports won’t be making it to Cannes this week.

Scott’s slower-than-expected recovery from a recent knee replacement will keep him from attending the premiere of ‘Robin Hood’ on Wednesday night. Cast members including Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett and Max Von Sydow will be there, as will producer Brian Grazer, among others.

Sitting it out isn’t usually Scott’s style. Speaking with the New York Times, Crowe told this Ridley Scott story involving a massive ‘Robin Hood’ setup -- see the picture above -- with multiple barges in the water and 500 French infantry-clad extras on the beach.

'[O]ne of the backs of the boats kept swinging into the frame ... Ridley jumped into the waves and grabbed this 15-ton barge with both hands, bum knee and all, and starts trying to push it out of the shot. When it was clear he was not going to win his lone battle against the barge, he looked back at the beach and the hundreds of extras and said, ‘Well, what are you waiting for?’ That’s leadership.’

‘Rise and rise again, until lambs become lions’ is the inscription on a sword that’s significant in the film -- a weapon that Crowe recently gave to Oprah Winfrey on Scott’s behalf.
