Mila Kunis will indeed attend the Marine Corps Ball with Sgt. Scott Moore, she confirmed loud and proud Thursday, putting to rest a rumor that she’d backed out.
Watch the video if you can, because she said it best: ‘Never did I say that I was not going.’ That version of events was made up, she said, ‘and people believed it, unfortunately.’
The rumor, which appeared to be based on a look at Kunis’ production obligations, was sketchy but got a lot of play.
‘I accepted an invitation and I’m staying true to my word,’ the actress said at a ‘Friends With Benefits’ media event. ‘I got permission to be released from work for the day, so I’m flying in and flying out.’ Kunis will be headed for the Greenville, N.C., event on Nov. 18.
The Tuesday after Kunis said yes, Moore said in an official military statement that he’d uploaded the video on a bet. The sergeant had taken questions submitted from stateside reporters, according to the Military Times, but wasn’t available for interviews because, you know, he was a little busy being a Marine on active duty in Afghanistan.
‘It was kind of a bet between me and Marines in my platoon,’ Moore said. ‘I told everyone I was going to do it, but they didn’t think I would go through with it,’ he wrote. ‘Of course, a bet between Marines must be honored, so I took the chance. You can’t make shots that you don’t take, so I took the best shot I could.’
Having Justin Timberlake as his wing man didn’t hurt either.
‘I wanted to take Mila Kunis to the Marine Corps ball,’ he said (The ball is a pretty big deal). ‘We all talk about what we are going to do when we get back, and this was my dream. I do feel bad for putting her on the spot, but it’s not like I was going to bump into her on the streets of Musa Qal’eh between now and the ball.’
Meanwhile, given Timberlake’s role in getting his costar to say yes, it was only a matter of time before a female Marine got all Sadie Hawkins on him. Backed by a few burly friends, Cpl. Kelsey De Santis decided to ‘call out’ Timberlake with an invite to the Nov. 12 ball she will be attending in Washington (Watch out if you click, because although the video’s clean, the comments definitely are not). And then there was that nonmilitary chick with the mask and the gun. Ladies, ladies!
Meanwhile, back home in Pennsylvania, Moore’s parents approved.
‘What hit me initially when I saw it was, boy, am I glad that he has a moment to be able to take time to do something fun,’ his father said. ‘Because I know they’ve put in extremely long hours and a lot of hard work goes in over there.’
