Thanks to Scion, Toyota’s youth-oriented little brother brand, the Fine Arts Theater on Wilshire will rock for three nights, October 23, November 14 and December 7. That’s when Scion puts on its independent film shows under its Route 07 banner. All films have been chosen for their groundbreaking style and subject matter.

Before the screenings, guests will be entertained by DJ Hier and there will be a Q & A session with the filmakers afterwards, plus a chance to meet them at a VIP reception.

On October 23, the main feature is Bling: A Planet Rock. It’s a documentary on how diamonds have been embraced by the urban music scene and how some of that scene’s stars are affected when they go to Africa, source of the coveted stones.

November 23’s show includes Paris is Burning, a documentary about gay black and Latino men competing in drag balls. A subject which director Jennie Livingston handles with wit, grace and wisdom.

Perhaps the most intriguing film will be Daft Punk’s Electroma showing on December 7. Daft Punk is one of the more witty and maverick duos currently working in popular music. Strange then, that Electroma is a silent film. It’s about two robots (stay with it) traversing a mythic American landscape of haunting, surreal beauty. Their quest: to become human. Did someone say Dorothy?

Each night will show several supporting short films. More info can be found on www.scion.com/route. And it has to be said: this is a pretty novel way to sell cars.
