News item: The Wall Street Journal reports that, during the summer mortgage meltdown, Bear Stearns CEO James ‘Jimmy’ Cayne, a 73-year-old former billionaire, was often unreachable, out of the office, golfing or playing in bridge tournaments, after which he sometimes enjoys smoking marijuana.

L.A. Land is about to embark on a week of similar behavior -- minus the bridge tournaments and the alleged pot smoking. That is to say, we’ll be on vacation through next week, playing some golf and neglecting the blog.

The good news for faithful readers is that the blog will not be dark -- Annette Haddad, one of the L.A. Times’ real estate writers and its web deputy for real estate, will be blogging in our place and posting your comments. We’ll be back Nov. 11. In the meantime, please welcome Annette to the blog.
