Crossover vehicles are gaining in popularity against traditional SUVs. Ford is hoping to catch this wave with the 2009 Flex. It has seating for up to seven occupants, features such amenities as a fridge, mood lighting and storage for around 2,300 songs. Which might result in making more babies for that third row of seats.

It’s the car’s interior that will be the strong point. Ford claims ‘a level of craftsmanship inspired by fashion and furniture design, with modern materials and soft touch points.’ Captain’s chairs can be ordered for the second row and the roof is a multi-panel arrangement that provides each row with its own skylight. There’s also a back-up camera, a full complement of airbags and the Ford/Microsoft Sync system.

Powered by a 3.5-liter V6, the Flex goes on sale this summer, with a base price of $28,995 for the front-wheel-drive SE model. At the other end of the range will be the all-wheel-drive, luxury-model Limited, priced $37,255 plus options (although it should have a lot of equipment as standard for that sum).
