A massive cosmetics giveaway began today at department stores across the nation as part of a settlement stemming from a class-action lawsuit filed in California in 2003.

Under the deal, several major department stores will distribute $175 million in free products to customers who purchased certain cosmetics items between May 29, 1994, and July 16, 2003. Each eligible customer can receive one free item from a list of approved products on a first-come, first-served basis.

Customers will not be asked to show a receipt or otherwise prove that they made eligible purchases in order to receive a free item. The lawsuit alleged that cosmetics manufacturers and department stores conspired to keep prestige cosmetics prices high.

Department stores that are participating include Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s. Cosmetics that are being given away include Chanel, Christian Dior and Estee Lauder items.

The giveaway runs until supplies last or through Jan. 26, whichever comes first.
