Restaurants are offering tacos and burgers for $1 or less to attract budget-strapped consumers. Here’s a $1 special that isn’t from a traditional fast-food chain.

Jamba Juice has a coupon for oatmeal made with organic steel-cut oats for just $1 at www.oatmealforabuck.com. It’s made fresh every morning and served with brown sugar crumble and a choice of three fruit toppings. The promotion runs until the end of March. Without a coupon, the oatmeal sells for $2.95.

Jamba Juice wants people to think of the chain when they need a quick breakfast. It also is counting on some of the people who buy oatmeal to also buy a full-price smoothie or other juice drink.

“The economy has an effect on everybody,” said James White, chief executive at the Emeryville-based chain. “Jamba Juice is always looking to bring customers high-quality menu items that fit into their lifestyle and budget. You can’t get anything for a buck these days, let alone a slow-cooked, delicious, wholesome meal.”
