Women’s high heels that break and choking hazards from children’s clogs sold exclusively at Wal-Mart stores prompted a recall today of about 273,000 shoes by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Children can choke on decorative wheels that detach from pairs of Buster Brown and Co. Cars Fleece Clog shoes — red plastic shoes with a fleece lining made to resemble characters from the Disney and Pixar movie ‘Cars,’ according to the commission recall statement.

About 73,000 pairs of the Cars Fleece Clogs, sold in the U.S. and Canada, are included in the recall, the statement said.

The children’s shoes were sold from September 2008 to this March in infant sizes 4 to 6 and toddler sizes 7 to 11, the commission said. Pagoda International Footwear Ltd., of Hong Kong made the shoes in China, the statement said.

About 200,000 pairs of George brand women’s shoes are also being recalled, the commission said.

Owners of the Cars Fleece clogs and the George brand shoes can return the products to Wal-Mart for a refund, the commission said.

The heels on the George pointed-toe slingbacks can easily detach, posing a falling hazard for those wearing them, the statement said.

The women’s shoes were sold between June and December of last year in black, gray and purple. They were made in China by Joyfair Footwear of Taipei, Taiwan, the statement said.
