The Consumer Product Safety Commission today announced a recall of about 5,000 cribs made by New Jersey-based LaJobi Inc.

The three crib models -- Bonavita Cabana, Bonavita Hudson and Babi Italia Pinehurst -- pose entrapment and suffocation hazards to children. Consumers should stop using the recalled products immediately and contact the manufacturer for a free remedy. Only cribs made during certain production dates are affected.

The Bonavita Cabana cribs, which were manufactured in Vietnam from January 2006 through October 2008 and have production dates between Jan. 1, 2006 and Oct. 31, 2008, feature wooden crib slats that can detach or break. That could create a gap where infants and toddlers could get trapped or strangled. The cribs were sold at USA Baby, Beautiful Beginnings, Buy Buy Baby and other specialty stores nationwide from January 2006 through May 2009 for about $450.

The Bonavita Hudson and Babi Italia Pinehurst cribs, which were made in China and have production dates of December 2006 through August 2007, feature lower spring pins on the footboard and headboard that can pop out of the tracks located on the drop-side, causing the drop-side to detach from the crib. When the drop-side detaches, it can create a hazardous gap in which infants and toddlers could become trapped and suffocate or could fall from the cribs.

The Babi Italia Pinehurst cribs were sold exclusively at Babies R Us. The Bonavita Hudson cribs were sold at Baby Basics, Beautiful Beginnings, Buy Buy Baby and other specialty children’s stores nationwide. The cribs were sold from December 2006 through December 2007.

The safety commission and LaJobi have received a total of 49 incident reports related to these problems. No serious injuries were reported.
