Consumer columnist David Lazarus points out that a public health insurance option already exists -- for Congress.

So if Republican senators get government-provided health insurance, why do they oppose giving it to their constituents?

Maybe government employees, including members of Congress, should be required to sign up for one of these cooperatives that everyone’s talking about to get their healthcare instead. That certainly would affect how co-ops are designed.
