Jobless claims jump. The weekly number of people claiming unemployment benefits jumped to 484,000, the Labor Department said. The increase was greater than analysts expected.

Good manufacturing data. Data from the Federal Reserve banks in New York and Philadelphia show that factory production continues to improve.

Goldman’s new problem. A board member at Goldman Sachs is being looked at by prosecutors in connection with the insider trading probe at the Galleon Group, the Wall Street Journal reported.
