Dick Van Patten’s dog food recalled over salmonella concerns

Natural Balance Pet Foods Inc., an animal food manufacturer in Pacoima, Calif., is recalling one of its varieties of dry dog food over concerns about salmonella contamination.

The company -- which was co-founded by ‘Eight is Enough’ actor Dick Van Patten -- is yanking its 5- and 28-pound bags of Sweet Potato & Chicken dry dog food after a random sample test by the Food and Drug Administration came up positive for the bacteria. The recalled products were manufactured Dec. 17 and have a “best by” date of June 17, 2011, printed on the bags.

The dog food was sold at retailers in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

In a statement to consumers, company president Joey Herrick said there had been no complaints about the recalled product.
