Halloween sales are expected to rise this year as millions of Americans buy costumes, candy and decorations for the Oct. 31 holiday.

Department store giant Macy’s Inc. says it expects improved sales in the second half of the year, and is hiring more seasonal workers as a result.

Burlington Coat Factory has announced plans to open its 56th California store in mid-November, although the off-price retail chain didn’t specify where the store would be. The company has been aggressively opening stores around the state this year, with five new locations in the spring and an additional nine planned for the fall. Burlington Coat Factory currently employs nearly 3,200 full and part-time workers in the Golden State and will add close to 700 more jobs before the end of this year.
