Black Friday Notebook: Personal spending boosts a bit at Wal-Mart in Duarte

When the Wal-Mart in Duarte opened for general Black Friday business at midnight, several shoppers picked up wristbands to be in line for big-ticket items, then went home to take a nap before the specialized electronics deals went live at 5 a.m.

Yvonne Sanchez, 46, an employee at a nonprofit, was waiting to pick up an iPod. In the meantime, the Monrovia resident grabbed $4 pajamas for her grandchildren and a set of flatware for $29. This year, she’s spending ‘a little bit more, but just barely,’ she said.

Mia Cira, 23, a CAD drafter from Glendale, was shopping for herself, buying pants, blouses and picture frames.

‘It’s worth staying up one night to get all your Christmas shopping done,’ she said. “The prices are so good that you could treat yourself for getting up so early.”
