Discount chains Wal-Mart and Target are ramping up plans to bring more fresh groceries to their stores, with both touting their offerings of affordable and healthful food.

On Wednesday, Wal-Mart announced that it would open 275 to 300 stores by 2016 in so-called ‘food deserts,’ or areas that don’t have access to healthful food options. The stores will be in urban and rural areas and will provide groceries for more than 800,000 people, the world’s largest retailer said.

Since 2007, Wal-Mart has opened 218 stores in food deserts. It made its latest announcement at the White House today with First Lady Michelle Obama, who has been encouraging retailers to offer more healthful options.

Separately, Target is continuing to expand the grocery sections in its existing stores, with dozens of remodeled stores set to debut this year. This month, Target locations in Ontario, Santa Ana, Riverside and Corona, among others, will complete the remodeling process. The grocery sections offer vegetables and fruit, fresh meats and prepackaged baked goods.
