President Obama announced this morning that he will hang around Washington instead of starting his Hawaii vacation so that he can be available to help the Senate work on healthcare overhaul.

“My attitude is that if they’re making these sacrifices to provide healthcare to all Americans, then the least I can do is to be around and provide them any encouragement and last-minute help where necessary,” Obama said today. The president was meeting with community bankers.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters earlier about the vacation delay. He said the president believes that the Senate will pass the pending bill, arguing it was no longer a question of if, but of when.

After passing a second procedural vote this morning, the Senate is on track for final passage by Christmas Eve.
