Obama’s presidency: Is it a failure or a success?

Here’s a different turn on the question of public approval for the job that President Obama is performing, close to one year in office: 48% of those surveyed in a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released today say Obama’s presidency has been a failure so far, with 47% calling it a success.

That failure conclusion matches the poll’s disapproval rating. Public approval is one thing, but a declaration of failure or success for any presidency after one year in office strikes this observer of polls as somewhat premature.

The president’s job approval stands at 51% in this poll -- 49% in the latest Gallup Poll daily tracking results and 46% in a new CBS News poll. That is down 3 points from CNN’s last measure in December. Disapproval for the president’s performance, 48% in the CNN survey, is up 4 points from December.
