Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has scheduled a key vote Thursday that will decide whether Ben S. Bernanke wins a second term as chairman of the Federal Reserve.
The vote requires a 60-vote majority in the 100-member Senate to overcome procedural obstacles from Bernanke’s Senate critics. Bernanke appears to have solidified his support in the Senate after the White House stepped in to quell rising opposition late last week.
Bernanke’s fate has been tied to the swell of public anger over the economy and Wall Street. Opponents of giving him a second term say he missed signs of an impending financial crisis. Supporters say he helped avoid a deeper crisis by using counter-measures to stabilize the financial system. His term ends Sunday.
