White House set to roll over Easter fat

Those cute, pudgy Easter bunnies may have to slim down or find a non-government gig.

The White House announced Tuesday that it will hold its Easter egg roll on Monday, April 5, under the slogan “Ready, Set, Go!” promoting health and wellness. First Lady Michelle Obama has made the battle against childhood obesity her cause celebre.

Putting aside its religious significance to Christians, the secular Easter is one of those celebrations based on the spreading of sugar: jelly beans, chocolate eggs, chocolate hares. All are building blocks of fat.

The tradition of the White House Easter egg roll dates from 1878. It is open to children no older than 12. Tickets will be distributed through a lottery, open from Feb. 25 to Feb. 28. Full ticketing details can be found at www.whitehouse.gov/eastereggroll.
