Worried about whether President Obama will seek another term? Concerned about Joe Biden’s future?

Well, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine has reassuring words for you.

“I am excited to announce that the Democratic Party will gather for our 46th National Convention during the week of September 3, 2012,” Kaine said on Monday in a blog post.

“At the convention, we will re-nominate President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, and re-affirm our party’s values of equality, inclusion, diversity, and respect,” he stated.

It may not be the biggest surprise that the president is ready for another campaign. His team has been raising money and after a bruising 16 months in office, his administration will probably need another four years to carry out its agenda.

But as a practical matter, Kaine had no choice in his announcement.

If he hadn’t said that the president and vice president would be renominated, the Obama administration would be a lame-duck operation, which might make Republicans and conservatives happy, but would have created problems in this already angry midterm-election year.

But there is no way of predicting the future, so it is always possible that Obama or Biden could decide to skip another term.

After all, as former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, a one-time presidential aspirant, used to say when reporters questioned his White House ambitions: “Between now and then a pope could be born.”

Still unknown is where the convention will be held.
