WellPoint on Friday asked for a meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to counter charges that the health insurance company dropped women with breast cancer.

“I request the opportunity to meet with you personally to further clarify the erroneous issues presented in your letter and discuss WellPoint’s programs with you in greater detail,” Angela F. Braly, chairwoman, president and chief executive of the insurer, said in a letter distributed by the company.

“To be absolutely clear, WellPoint does not single out women with breast cancer for recession. Period,” she said in the letter.

Earlier Friday, Sebelius wrote to Braly and urged the company to end its reported practice of dropping health insurance coverage for women with breast cancer.
