BEIJING -- In a matter of a day, Alexander Artemev has gone from being a sad-sack alternate to being in contention to qualify for the men’s individual all-around title.

Only Artemev and Jonathan Horton will compete on all six apparatus when the men’s team qualifying begins Saturday at the National Indoor Stadium. Artemev was the last-minute replace for Morgan Hamm, who withdrew Thursday night with an ankle injury. Paul Hamm, the defending Olympic all-around champion, withdrew July 28 and was replaced by Raj Bhavsar, who is competing on five of the six apparatus. In team qualifying, five men do routines on each piece of equipment, and the top four scores count.
