Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), the Pittsburgh-born OB/GYN considered by some to be the great libertarian hope in the nation’s capital, has formed an exploratory committee toward a 2008 presidential bid. Proof that the long-awaited liberarian rising is once again just months away? Or proof that it’s possible to be a longer shot than Dennis Kucinich?

Given the lower house’s long non-history as a staging ground for the presidency, I think we can view this one strictly as a consciousness-raising exercise, and it will be fun to see Paul—a constitutional curmudgeon, a Chicken Little goldbug, and an American original—on the stump.
