Like any self-respecting, God-fearing American -- and I use the term advisedly -- I always try to have already seen the movies nominated for an Oscar before the nominees are announced. And like most of my fellow citizens, I usually fail, and play catch-up in the grace period between the announcement of the nominees and announcement of the winners.

So I was pleased, on a transcontinental flight this week, to see that ‘The Queen’ was among the offerings, and eagerly awaited seeing it in all its small-screen, plastic-headset splendor. I know the airlines censor movies, and I was prepared to do without a few of the stronger curses, but still, I was surprised at the zealotry, which is detailed here. It was most noticeable at the climax of the movie -- no spoiler alert necessary, if you don’t know Princess Diana is dead, you shouldn’t be reading this -- when Queen Elizabeth reads this statement. Say that last paragraph with ‘God’ bleeped out.

Talk about the absence of God from public life. Bill Donohue, where are you when we need you?
